Quilting at Grace

The Dorcas Quilting Group

Each Monday afternoon you will find a group of dedicated people in the basement under the 100 year old  sanctuary. There are racks stretching out handmade quilts all over the basement. The patterns are simple. Large blocks, small squares, mismatched fabrics. The quilters use mostly donated fabric to piece together love, hope, and joy. Every year they hand tie the backing, batting, and quilt top to hundreds of quilts.
Where do the quilts go?
The quilts start their journey on a big semi truck that picks up what our group has made, as well as what other churches in Northeast South Dakota have made. From there they join up with thousands of quilts from across the country to be distributed by Lutheran World Relief. Lutheran World Relief distributes the quilts around the world and across the country to people in need of some warmth. Physically and spiritually. Every stitch is put in to the quilts with the love of Jesus in the heart of the quilter, knowing that it will go to someone who really needs it.
Before the quilts begin their long journey, they are displayed in the sanctuary for everyone to see, then we bless them together for the journey ahead. The Blessing of the Quilts is typically held near the end of September every year. Please join us for our next quilt blessing, and join the ladies in the basement too! I heard they are great teachers and have good snacks!
